They're not that much like ants. They have a vaguely similar hive structure, but that's about it.

I think they're just a lot like insects, more generally speaking.

They have their hives and queens in common with both ants and bees, they use chemical/acidic weapons for defense which is also a lot like ants, and the way they infest other living hosts and eat their way out of them from the inside is a lot like how some parasite larvae lay eggs inside for example beetles, which hatch and the offspring slowly start munching away at them from within as well until they poke through the shell of the still living host.

I think though going by the looks of them, that they at least look more like ants, possibly combined with some spider, than any other insect we have. Especially in the AvP movie when swarming up the pyramid, that made it look a lot like an anthill.

And who knows, if Paul Anderson would have gotten to do the sequel as well, maybe we'd have yellow and black striped aliens buzzing around pollinating flowers.
