Me and Steve Perry still talk every now and then about books, writing and whatever, he's a fun person, he just told me about cover art on books, really interesting, did you know that if you was a writer you don't always get to choose what goes on the front cover of the book?

I didn't know that. Why can't you choose?

Here is what Steve said:

Most of the time, the writer has nothing to do with the cover. The art director and editor do that, and usually -- not always -- the editor sends the artist the ms and tells him what he or she generally wants to see for cover art.

If you are a really big-time writer, you might get input into the cover; or if you have a long-running series of books, sometimes they might ask what you'd like to see.

Last time that happened to me was on The Musashi Flex, a space opera novel that is part of series for Ace Books. They asked, I said, I want to see a muscular martial artist in a fighting pose holding a knife, and that's what they had the artist draw. I loved it.
